Children and young people face a variety of conflicting challenges. Most will face these positively whilst others may struggle to cope, with possible impact to their mental health and wellbeing.

The COVID-19 global health emergency and its widespread health, psychological, economic and social impacts have disrupted nearly all aspects of life for all groups in society. However, for children and young people, and their parents and carers, the COVID-19 crisis poses considerable mental health risks with potentially long-lasting ramifications.

This talk with Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Dr Nihara Krause, is informed by psychological evidence and her clinical experience of working with young people and their families.

Workshop outline:

  • An understanding of what to expect at different developmental stages and how this affects the behaviours, emotions and social functioning of children and young people.
  • An account of some of the difficulties that children and young people face and how they may respond to these.
  • Why building emotional resilience is essential based on current figures of increasing mental health problems in the population and what parents can do to enhance wellbeing and positive mental health.
  • How parents might safeguard their children and young people against the potential risks to their mental health posed both pre and post the pandemic.
  • Early identification of mental ill health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, eating disorders. What the first steps might be and signposting to help.
  • Some tips to look after your own mental health.
