WorkplacePregnancyMental healthWorkshop

Postnatal depression is characterised by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt or self-blame, consistently for weeks or months after you’ve had a baby. Some women may experience these same symptoms of depression when they are pregnant, when it is termed antenatal depression. Depression is a mental ill health condition and needs diagnosis and treatment.

This talk with Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Dr Nihara Krause, is informed by psychological evidence and her extensive clinical experience of working with women and their partners.

Workshop outline:

  • Antenatal depression and how it might present, including some vulnerability factors.
  • What Postnatal Depression (PND) is and what sorts of symptoms usually suggest it is PND rather than β€˜baby blues’.
  • Some of the causes of PND
  • How PND can be avoided or managed effectively at an early stage.
  • Treatments that are available will be discussed including self-help as well as evidence based psychological treatments.
  • How other family members are affected and can respond.
  • Supporting both antenatal and postnatal depression at work.
