"The most connected generation in history is also the most lonely.” - Matt Haig

Mental Health Awareness Week 2022 will take place 9-15 May on the topic of Loneliness.

About this workshop:

Loneliness is a rapidly rising experience, especially as a consequence of the pandemic. Levels of loneliness in Great Britain have risen since Spring 2020 with around 3.7 million adults (7.2% of the adult population) reporting the fact they felt lonely (OPN, 2021).

In addition, around a quarter of the 16-24-year-old age group report increased loneliness. Loneliness is extremely distressing for the individual experiencing it and can pose many risks.

Loneliness at work impacts not only the person affected but also the team or organisation. Identifying loneliness and developing resilient leadership and work-related structures to combat loneliness will help build long-term personal and organisational change.

This talk with Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Dr Nihara Krause, is informed by psychological evidence and clinical experience of working with adults and organisations.

She will cover:

  • Background to the ‘loneliness epidemic’ contributory and maintaining factors.
  • How to identify and engage a lonely colleague.
  • Ways to beat loneliness in the workplace.
  • Ensuring strategies and structures are in place to combat loneliness and bring about positive change

Our connection to other people and our community is fundamental to protecting our mental health and we need to find better ways of tackling the epidemic of loneliness.

We can all play a part in this. Reducing loneliness is a major step towards a mentally healthy society.
