Hi, I’m Annabel. I'm a teacher, tutor, author, and founder of Bella learning.

When your child starts school and starts learning phonics, you might start to notice that they are pronounced slightly differently to how you remember them. Today, I'm going to show you how some of those sounds have changed.

For example, you might remember saying, “muh, muh”. Well, we don't teach that anymore, we teach “mmmm”

Similarly, we have a long sound for what we used to say “suh” for. Now we say “sssss”. It’s a stretchy sound.

Some sounds we try and make as short as possible, like a popping sound. So, we don't make that “puh” sound anymore, we say “p, p, p”. And “t, t, t”.

This is so when your child comes to blending. They do get mixed up with the sound but aren't actually there.

Finally, and this is my favourite one. X. We now pronounce “ks”

If you think of the word BOX – B-O-KS – that’s the sound it makes, so we say “ks”

I hope this has been helpful. I can show you all the sounds and teach you lots of things, all about phonics if you come along to my Phonics Explained workshop. Thank you.
