Trying to Conceive

Periods that don’t come once a month are normally the result of a hormone imbalance.

Irregular bleeds can also happen as a result of innocent growths called polyps that can arise from the cervix at the neck of the womb, or inside the womb cavity. cervical polyps can easily be removed aimlessly in the office, but ones in the womb need a day case operation to remove the stalk to prevent recurrence.

Cervix inflammation caused by an ectropion (erosion) typically causes bleeding after sex and increased vaginal discharge. They can cause some discomfort, and as long as your smear test is normal, they can be treated with a quick pain free freezing procedure in the office.

An ovarian cyst can sometimes cause irregular bleeding. These may need medical or surgical treatment depending on the type of cyst.

Irregular bleeding, especially in older women, can be a symptom of cancer, so irregular bleeds should always be investigated.
