How to make the most of parents’ evening! So you’ve been to a meeting with your child’s teacher and have an overview of how your child is progressing... but what do you do next to help?

  1. Discuss what the teacher said with your child. They may already be aware of what they need to work on, but if they don’t, talk about it. Set a goal together of something they would like to achieve by the end of next term and make a plan of how to get there.

For example, you’re told they give up easily when they’re learning something new – especially times tables! Could you set a goal for them to have a ‘can-do’ attitude? Steps to getting there could be learning new sets of times tables in small batches. Praise them for the ones they get right and acknowledge when they have a positive learning attitude.

  1. If you’ve set any goals with your child’s teacher, plan in time to review these. Depending on how the teacher likes to work, this could be an email, a call, or a face-to-face catch up 6–8 weeks after the initial meeting. Review how things are going and make changes if needed.
  2. You may come away from a meeting and realise you’ve forgotten or didn’t quite follow something that was said. If this is the case, your first port of call should be the school website – you will find a wealth of information on there. Alternatively ask your fellow parents for help; lots of them will have had the same questions, so they may have some advice. If all else fails, contact the school directly and ask when would be the best time to go through your queries.
